Mary Church Terrell: An Original Oberlin Activist

The Progress of Colored Women

Terrell was invited to deliver “The Progress of Colored Women” in a wide variety of venues including the National American Woman's Suffrage Association Convention in Washington, D.C., in 1898, and the Women’s Meeting at the annual American Missionary Association meeting in New York, NY, in 1900. Interested readers will note the differences in the talk as presented to two different audiences - suffragists and missionaries.

At the International Congress of Women in Berlin, Germany, in 1904, Terrell was the only speaker to address the assembly in English, French, and German - the title of her talk translated to "Die Fortschritte der Farbigen Frauen."
