Mary Church Terrell: An Original Oberlin Activist

Oberlin College Master of Arts (1888)

In 1888 Oberlin College awarded Terrell a Masters of Arts degree. In the nineteenth century, graduate education did not require attending classes on campus. 

According to the General Catalogue:

The degree of Masters of Arts is conferred upon any Bachelor of Arts of three or more years standing, who has been engaged in literary or scientific pursuits, and has sustained a good moral character.
