Mary Church Terrell: An Original Oberlin Activist

Leadership

Mary Church Terrell often remarked upon the double burden of being a "colored" woman in the United States, squarely at the intersection of gender and race in a society that discriminated against her on both accounts. Yet she was undeterred. Terrell worked tirelessly throughout her life for the uplift of women, children and "colored" people. She led by example in unpaid positions in a wide variety of organizations, boards, and committees.  Terrell was no mere figurehead - she was a foot soldier for her beliefs.
